Why Juneteenth to Independence Day?
What does it mean for people in the United States and internationally to come together to explore and celebrate freedom from slavery and our ability to collectively self-organize? All people have an experience of what freedom means to them. Through this festival of freedom we want to create OUR answers.
improvscience is creating a stage where people of all walks of life invite one another to experience, celebrate and advance what freedom and independence means to us all.
Opal Lee
Grandmother of Juneteenth
Opal Lee, the Grandmother of Juneteenth, campaigned for decades to have a federal holiday recognizing the final freeing of enslaved Americans. This was signed into law in 2021. She called for fifteen days of celebration from Juneteenth through Independence Day (15 days). Together, we are creating a new cultural moment in America.

In-Person and Online Events

Events will be offered “from California to the New York Island”—in-person and online. These will include conversations about what freedom means to us, about justice and liberty, about Black activists and artists across history. There will be opportunities to play, to enjoy music and games offered by improvscience and our hosting partners. Sign up below to donate, host, or be kept informed as the program develops.
Global Participation
Liberty and Justice for all
Participants around the globe are invited to offer an event, a conversation, a gift or a discount, in acknowledgment and celebration of America having succeeded, in a small or great way, in creating freedom and independence. By consciously and intentionally creating culture—together—we have a chance at continuing to build the American Dream: liberty and justice for all. Note: Although centered in the USA, freedom and independence are global issues, so we participants from around the world are invited.

Hi! I'm Raquell Holmes, the director of improvscience. I'm donating personal time and improvscience resources to the creation of a festival that I think the country needs and that is resonating with everyone with whom I speak. With the country as our canvas, we can create our hope story, our hope moment, by sharing and building with our histories.
